Permissionless interoperability layer for connecting any chain or rollup

What is Hyperlane?

Hyperlane is a permissionless interoperability protocol that lets developers add cross-chain messaging to any blockchain or rollup — including new app-chains and custom rollups — without needing permission or waiting for a bridge provider to support them. Its defining feature is permissionlessness: anyone can deploy Hyperlane to connect a chain, and its modular security model (Interchain Security Modules, or ISMs) lets each application configure how its cross-chain messages are secured, from economic security to multisig to custom schemes. This makes Hyperlane especially relevant in the emerging world of many app-specific rollups and modular chains, where new networks need interoperability the day they launch. It supports asset bridging (via Warp Routes) and arbitrary messaging. The trade-offs: permissionless, configurable security means the trust model is app-specific and must be evaluated per deployment (flexibility cuts both ways); it's infrastructure aimed at developers and chain builders rather than a consumer bridge; and, like all interoperability, cross-chain security is a critical, scrutinized concern. But for developers and rollup/app-chain builders who need to add interoperability to new or custom chains without gatekeepers — with security they control — Hyperlane is a leading permissionless interoperability layer purpose-built for the modular, multi-rollup future.

Hyperlane Pros & Cons

  • Modular, app-configurable security (ISMs)
  • Ideal for new app-chains and custom rollups
  • Warp Routes for asset bridging
  • Built for the modular multi-rollup future

Cons

  • App-specific trust model to evaluate per deployment
  • Configurable security cuts both ways
