Buyer’s guide: Cross-Chain Bridges

Security model matters far more than fees

Bridges have lost over a billion dollars to exploits — more than any other category in crypto. That makes 'which bridge is cheapest' the wrong first question. The right one is which bridge minimises what you have to trust. Most bridges lock your asset and mint a wrapped IOU, and that lock contract becomes a honeypot. The newer designs deliberately avoid this, and the security model should drive your choice, not the fee.

Native transfers beat wrapped tokens

For USDC specifically, Circle's CCTP burns the token on the source chain and mints genuine, canonical USDC on the destination — no wrapped IOU that could de-peg if the bridge is exploited. This is why nearly every major bridge routes USDC through CCTP. Intent-based bridges like deBridge and Across use solver networks instead of pooled liquidity, avoiding the honeypot entirely. These models are meaningfully safer than lock-and-wrap.

Aggregators are the practical answer for most people

You do not have to choose a bridge yourself. Aggregators like Jumper (on LI.FI) and Bungee (on Socket) scan many bridges and DEXs at once and route your transfer through whatever gives the best quote across 50+ chains. The caveat: an aggregator's security is inherited from whichever bridge it routes through. What they eliminate is you accidentally picking a bad bridge on a route you have never used.

Rules that save you money and funds

Always test a new route with a small amount first — the cost is trivial against discovering a problem with your full balance. Check what you receive, not just what you send: a wrapped token is an IOU whose value depends on the bridge staying solvent. Make sure you have destination-chain gas (bridging your whole balance to a chain where you cannot transact is a common, infuriating mistake). And compare total cost — bridge fee plus gas on both sides plus slippage.
