Generalists vs chain specialists

The biggest choice is between broad multi-chain providers (Alchemy, QuickNode, Chainstack) and chain specialists (Helius for Solana, NodeReal for BNB Chain, OnFinality for Polkadot and Cosmos). Generalists give you one vendor and one bill across many chains; specialists deliver performance and enhanced APIs that generalists cannot match on their specific chain. If Solana is your main chain, a specialist is worth it — generic RPC underperforms badly under Solana's load.

Why you must run more than one provider

Every provider has outages. If your app depends on a single RPC endpoint, their downtime is your downtime. The single most important reliability decision is running a primary provider plus an automatic fallback from a different company. Chainstack and dRPC are commonly recommended as secondaries for cost and geographic diversity. Decentralised options like Pocket Network and Grove build redundancy in by routing across many independent node operators.

Enhanced APIs are where the real value is

Raw RPC — reading and writing to the chain — is largely commoditised. The differentiator is enhanced tooling: decoded token and NFT APIs, webhooks for on-chain events, transaction simulation, account-abstraction infrastructure, and (on Solana) parsed transactions and the DAS API for compressed NFTs. These save weeks of engineering. Evaluate providers on the higher-level APIs you need, not just endpoint uptime.

How to evaluate before committing

Test with production-representative traffic — marketing benchmarks are useless. Measure p95 latency (the tail is what users feel), not the average. On Solana specifically, test transaction landing under congestion, because that is the metric that determines whether swaps succeed. Confirm whether you need archive or trace access before you need it, since it is priced separately almost everywhere, and get SLA terms in writing for anything where downtime costs money.
