What is EigenLayer?

EigenLayer invented restaking — a primitive that allows Ethereum validators and liquid staking token holders to extend their slashable economic stake to additional services beyond Ethereum consensus, called Actively Validated Services (AVSs). When you restake via EigenLayer (depositing stETH, rETH, cbETH, or natively staked ETH), you opt into having your capital slashable by AVS smart contracts in exchange for additional reward streams. AVSs that have launched include EigenDA (a data availability layer for Ethereum L2s operated by Eigen Labs), various oracle networks, keeper bot systems, and cross-chain bridge validators. EigenLayer attracted over $15 billion in restaked assets at peak, making it one of the fastest-growing DeFi protocols in history. The EIGEN token launched in 2024 with a controversial airdrop that excluded US users, and subsequently traded at significant market caps. For Ethereum stakers already earning staking yield, restaking offers incremental yield for incremental risk — the risk being that AVS slashing conditions could penalize your ETH for off-chain behavior outside of Ethereum's core consensus rules. The risk-reward calculus depends heavily on which AVSs you opt into and their respective slashing conditions.

EigenLayer Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Invented restaking — incremental yield on already-staked ETH
  • EigenDA provides cheap data availability already used by Arbitrum and others
  • Largest restaking TVL — $10B+ demonstrates market validation of the primitive
  • Operators can selectively opt into AVSs based on risk tolerance
  • EIGEN token provides governance over the restaking protocol's parameters

Cons

  • Additional slashing risk from AVSs — not all slashing conditions are well-understood
  • AVS ecosystem rewards often lower than promised at launch — yield not guaranteed
  • Centralization concern — most restaked ETH concentrated with professional operators
  • EIGEN airdrop excluded US users — community trust issue at launch
  • Protocol risk on top of Ethereum consensus risk — layered complexity
